According to popular belief, in the 18th century, “Bockenrreyders” or “Bokkenrijders” were people or spirits who rode through the air on goats. In the former county of Loon, the present-day Southern Netherlands and Northern Belgian territory, these violent gangs of goat riders organised their plundering raids up to the German border.
During the First World War, the German occupiers built a 332-kilometre-long electric wire fence (Death Wire) in this border area to try to stop smuggling and war volunteers; only a few silent witnesses of this remain.
Selected for you the most beautiful ... and most typical Kempen smuggling paths, some of which meander endlessly over the Belgian / Dutch and have chosen a largely new, sublime, damage-free 4x4 route that takes you through the heart of the Kempen via centuries-old muddy farm paths.
The whole route can be driven in peace and quiet, individually or in small groups, with a special reference to our “Charter of the responsible 4x4-driver”, which will be handed to you.
